How to Choose a Hanger Supplier for Retail Display

A specification guide for VM and store planning leads: rail consistency, garment-to-width matching in wood and acrylic, finishes, hardware, order quantities and lead time.

Hangers are the most repeated object in a clothing store. A mid-size boutique carries several hundred on the floor at any one time, and every one of them sits directly behind a garment a customer is looking at. That makes hanger selection a visual merchandising decision before it is a purchasing one — and in most fashion brands the person who writes the specification is the VM or store planning lead, not the buyer.

This guide covers what actually has to be decided: rail consistency, matching width to garment, material and finish, hardware, order quantities and lead time. Dimensions quoted are XINTU factory reference measurements.

Rail consistency is the real specification

A hanger that gets noticed is usually the wrong hanger. The job of a retail hanger is to hold the shoulder line correctly and then disappear, so the garment leads. What breaks that is not the quality of any single piece — it is inconsistency across the rail.

Three things break a rail visually, and all three are specification errors rather than product faults:

  • Mixed shoulder widths. Shoulder width sets how far apart garments sit. Mix a 38.5 cm acrylic and a 42 cm wooden women’s hanger on the same rail — both correct for the same garment — and the spacing becomes irregular, which reads as clutter even when the garments are perfectly merchandised.
  • Mixed hook tones. A silver hook on a black rail and a gold hook on the next rail is one of the fastest ways to make a considered store look unplanned. Hook plating should be decided against the store fixtures, not against the hanger body.
  • Mixed batches from different suppliers. Wood tone, lacquer sheen and acrylic clarity all vary between factories. A reorder placed elsewhere will rarely match the units already hanging.

Shoulder width also controls hanging density, which is a merchandising lever in its own right. Wider hangers force more space between garments and make a rail read as edited and premium; narrower hangers let you carry more units per metre. Decide the density you want per zone first, then pick the width that delivers it.

Match the width to the garment — and to the material

Width is the single most consequential dimension. Too narrow and the shoulder line collapses; too wide and the garment is stretched at the seam. What most buyers do not expect is that wood and acrylic run on different width scales for the same garment. A wooden profile is thicker, so it carries a wider shoulder to distribute the same load. Specify a wooden women’s hanger at the acrylic width and the shoulder will sit short.

Women’s blouses, tops, knitwear42 cm38.5–39 cm
Women’s blazers and coats43 cm39 cm, taller hook
Men’s shirts43 cm
Men’s suits and overcoats45 cm43.5 cm
Men’s extra-wide coat and fur46 cm

Two further wood dimensions matter once the width is fixed. Overall height including the hook runs 17 cm on children’s, 20–21 cm on women’s and 23 cm on men’s — this is what determines whether a garment clears the rail below on a double-hang fixture. Shoulder thickness runs 2.5 cm on children’s, 3 cm on a standard women’s profile, 4.5 cm on a heavier women’s coat profile and 5.5–6 cm on men’s tailoring. Thickness is what actually holds a canvassed shoulder in shape, and it is the specification most often left off a brief.

Trouser and skirt hangers

These follow their own scale, and the construction differs by material. Acrylic uses an open bar; wood is usually a closed frame with a clamped or clipped bar.

Acrylic bar thickness runs 1.2–1.5 cm. A thicker bar spreads the fold over a wider radius and leaves a softer crease line, which matters on unlined wool and on pleated skirts. All figures are factory reference measurements; small variances are normal and other sizes can be produced to order.

Choosing the material

Material is where the display language is set. All four options below hold a garment properly — the decision is about what the rail should say.

Solid wood

Wood is the default for heritage, tailoring and premium casual. It carries weight without flexing, and the grain gives a rail visual warmth that plastic cannot. The species we run in production are white ash, beech, North American black walnut, rubberwood, schima and pine. Ash and beech take stain and paint evenly and are the usual choice for a house standard; black walnut is specified when the hanger itself is meant to be part of the luxury signal.

Acrylic

Acrylic suits contemporary, minimal and colour-led concepts. A clear hanger visually disappears, which is useful when you want an uninterrupted run of garment on a long rail. It also allows colour as a merchandising device — a colour-coded rail by size or capsule is straightforward in acrylic and expensive in wood. Clear, black-smoke and amber-tortoise are our standard finishes, with red, blue, orange and yellow available as accent colours.

Resin

Resin is specified where a wood or acrylic form cannot deliver the effect — marbled and stone-look surfaces, and extra-wide profiles for coats and fur where the shoulder needs an unusually broad bearing surface.

Fabric-wrapped

A fabric-wrapped hanger is the option most often overlooked. Wrapping the hanger in the same linen or velvet used on your fabric-covered mannequins makes the rail and the display forms read as one system, which is difficult to achieve any other way. It is a specialty item rather than a floor-wide standard, and it works best in a window, a VIP room or a single feature rail.

Finish, hardware and functional details

Finish decisions are made after the material, and they change the cost and the lead time more than most buyers expect.

On wood, the finishes we run include clear lacquer, honey natural, vintage brown stain, walnut, matte black, matte ivory, matte white, glossy white, wax-oil and a whitewashed brushed finish. Lacquer is the hardest wearing and the easiest to keep looking new under daily handling. Wax-oil gives a lower sheen and a more tactile surface, and it shows wear sooner. Flocked shoulders can be added where a garment needs grip.

Hooks can be plated in silver, gold or black tone. This is the detail to align with your store fixtures rather than the hanger body — a black hook on a natural ash hanger looks deliberate against black rails, and wrong against brass.

Functional details worth specifying explicitly, because they are usually assumed rather than written down:

  • Non-slip shaped shoulders or shoulder tips for blouses and wide necklines that slide off a plain profile.
  • Notches for straps and hanging loops on dresses and camisoles.
  • Clips on trouser and skirt hangers, specified by clip width and grip type.
  • Shoulder profile — rounded, pointed or tapered ends change the silhouette of the rail as much as the width does.

Branding

Printed logos and logo tags are the standard branding routes and are available above minimum order quantity, together with custom body colours matched to your palette. Branding placement should be decided against how the rail is viewed: a logo on the hook side is visible when the customer faces the rail head-on, while a logo on the shoulder face is visible only when a garment is lifted. Tell us the method and placement you want and we will confirm what is achievable at your quantity.

How many hangers to order

Most under-orders come from counting the floor and forgetting everything else. A workable estimate for a single store is:

  • Hangers on the floor, counted by rail length and the hanging density you decided earlier.
  • Fitting rooms and the service desk.
  • Stockroom, which in practice often needs as many again as the floor.
  • A spare allowance of 10–15 per cent for breakage, loss and seasonal peaks.

Minimum order quantities apply per colour or per style rather than per order, which is the part that most affects planning. Acrylic hangers are produced from 500 pieces per colour. Wooden and resin hangers are produced from 1,000 pieces per style. A three-colour acrylic programme is therefore a 1,500-piece order, not a 500-piece one — worth knowing before a colour-coded concept is signed off.

For a multi-store rollout, consolidate the order across stores rather than ordering store by store. It reaches the quantity thresholds faster and, more importantly, means every store receives units from the same production batch.

Lead time and keeping reorders identical

As a rough guide, samples take one to three weeks and bulk production several weeks after sample approval, with sea freight adding transit time on top. Peak periods before major retail seasons run longer, so a hanger programme tied to a store opening should be placed early.

Reorder consistency is where hanger programmes usually fail, and it is preventable. Approve a physical sample and keep it. Record the specification in writing — species, finish name, width, hook height, hook plating, branding method. Wood tone and stain shade vary slightly between batches, so a retained reference sample is what a factory matches against on your second order two years later.

A checklist before you request a quote

  • Garment types and the width band each one needs.
  • Material and finish, with a reference image or a physical sample if you have one.
  • Hook plating, chosen against your store fixtures.
  • Functional details: non-slip shoulders, notches, clips.
  • Branding method and placement.
  • Quantity per style and per colour, including stockroom and spares.
  • Target delivery date, working backwards from the store opening or season launch.

The more of this you can state up front, the more accurate the price, minimum order quantity and lead time you get back.
